Marco Castellano
Middleweight, MMA
If the walkout song doesn't scare me a little, it's the wrong song.
Why his camp runs on thrash, how he picks a walkout song, and the one album he swears he will never train without.
The Camp
Metal Overtime: What does a camp sound like?
Loud. There is a speaker in every corner of our gym and they all play thrash. The coaches pick the music for sparring. I pick it for conditioning.
Metal Overtime: Why thrash specifically?
It never slows down. Fighting does not either. If I can keep up with the song, I can keep up with the round.

The Walk
Metal Overtime: How do you choose a walkout song?
I pick it the week of the fight. It has to fit the opponent. Fast if he is a counter-puncher, heavy if he is a wrestler. And it has to scare me a little.
Metal Overtime: Is there an album you will not train without?
Yes, and I am not telling you which one. The day I say it out loud, it stops working.
If the walkout song doesn't scare me a little, it's the wrong song.

Jax Merritt
Vocalist, Ashen Crown
A torn ACL ended Jax Merritt's college football career. It also started a decade of fronting one of the loudest bands in New England.
