Portrait of Luis Ferreira on stage

Luis Ferreira

Guitarist, Blackwater Riot

A penalty kick and a stage dive are the same decision. You commit or you get hurt.

Before Blackwater Riot, Luis Ferreira was a semi-pro goalkeeper. He talks about split-second decisions, stage dives and why thrash is the only music fast enough for a keeper's brain.

The Box

Metal Overtime: What made you give up goalkeeping?

Luis Ferreira:

A shoulder that stopped working and a band that started working. The timing made the decision for me.

Metal Overtime: What carried over from the pitch to the stage?

Luis Ferreira:

Reading people. A keeper watches hips and eyes to guess where the ball is going. On stage I watch the crowd the same way. You can see a pit start before it starts.

The Stage

Metal Overtime: You are known for stage dives. Any close calls?

Luis Ferreira:

One. A festival in the rain, the crowd was thinner than it looked. I landed like a keeper, rolled out of it, finished the song. Training pays off in strange ways.

Metal Overtime: Why thrash?

Luis Ferreira:

Because it moves at the speed my brain moved in goal. Anything slower and I start overthinking.
