Portrait of Jax Merritt on stage

Jax Merritt

Vocalist, Ashen Crown

My knee ended one career and started another.

A torn ACL ended Jax Merritt's college football career. It also started a decade of fronting one of the loudest bands in New England.

The Injury

Metal Overtime: Take us back to the injury.

Jax Merritt:

Third game of my junior year. Planted, turned, heard it pop. I knew before I hit the ground.

The rehab took a year. The band started in the middle of it, mostly as a way to be loud about how angry I was.

Metal Overtime: Do you miss football?

Jax Merritt:

Every fall. But I get the same feeling walking on stage. The lights, the noise, the moment right before it starts.

My knee ended one career and started another.

The Voice

Metal Overtime: How do you protect your voice on tour?

Jax Merritt:

Like an athlete protects a joint. Warm-up, cool-down, sleep, water, and no yelling at bars after the show. That last one is the hardest.

Metal Overtime: Your band is now playing hockey arenas. How does that feel?

Jax Merritt:

Strange, in a good way. I used to be the guy in the locker room listening to whatever the arena played. Now we are the arena playlist.

If the walkout song doesn't scare me a little, it's the wrong song.
