Headbanger's Neck: A Physical Therapist on the Pit Injury Nobody Talks About

Stiff neck after a show is common. A physical therapist explains why it happens and how to protect yourself without giving it up.

Fans at a sold-out show. The next morning is a different story.

Almost everyone who has spent a night near the front of a metal show knows the feeling the next morning: a stiff neck, a sore upper back and a vague promise to take it easier next time.

We asked a sports physical therapist what is actually going on, and what fans can do about it. This is general information, not medical advice, so talk to a professional about any pain that sticks around.

Why It Happens

Fast, repeated movement of the head and neck puts a lot of load on muscles that are not used to it. The fix is familiar to any athlete: warm up, build tolerance gradually, and rest afterward.

Treat a show like a workout. You would not sprint without warming up.

Simple Tips

  • Loosen up your neck and shoulders before the show.
  • Move from the upper back, not just the neck.
  • Take breaks between songs.
  • Stay hydrated.
